Introduction

The School of Information Mechanics and Sensing Engineering at Xidian University was established in January 2025. Led by Professor Xiaojing Zheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the School has brought together a high-level innovation team. It currently has 43 full-time teachers, including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two national-level leading talents, three national-level young talents, one Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, nine provincial and ministerial level talents, one Young Scientist of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, and one Young Elite Scientist sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology. The faculty also include one IEEE Fellow and four scholars listed among Elsevier's World's Top 2% Scientists. The School's faculty have long been engaged in fields related to Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Dynamics and Control, Remote Sensing Science, Remote Sensing Detection Technology, Remote Sensing Information Engineering, and Low-Altitude Remote Sensing Technology. They have achieved systematic innovations in fundamental theories and methodologies for the mechanics of electronic devices, information sensing in extreme environments, remote sensing detection and imaging, and multifunctional sensing electronic microsystems.

The School is comprised of three disciplines: Mechanics, Remote Sensing Science and Technology, and Low-Altitude Technology and Engineering. Among them, Mechanics is the only first-level doctoral degree authorization point in Mechanics approved among China's universities specializing in electronic information, and it was included in ShanghaiRanking's 2025 Ranking of China's Best Subjects. Geosciences has remained in the global top 1% of ESI since 2019. Remote Sensing ranked second in ShanghaiRanking's 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. With an integration of science and engineering, the School has built a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research.

The School offers three undergraduate programs: Engineering Mechanics, Remote Sensing Science and Technology, and Low-Altitude Technology and Engineering. Following a student-centered approach, the School has established the Meiyin Information Mechanics Honors Program based on its disciplinary strengths, with the goal of cultivating top innovative talents in foundational and interdisciplinary fields. The Remote Sensing Science and Technology program focuses on the deep integration of electronic information and AI, aiming to build a high-level training platform for innovative remote sensing talent. The Low-Altitude Technology and Engineering program centers on mechanics, electronics, computing, information, sensing, intelligence and control; strengthens industry-education integration and university-enterprise collaboration; and precisely serves the development needs of national strategic emerging industries. Each year, the School enrolls about 140 undergraduates and about 100 master's and doctoral students. Students have won national disciplinary competition awards, including a national bronze award in the China International College Students' Innovation Competition and a national first prize in the 20th China Graduate Electronic Design Contest.

Building on the long-standing support of Xidian University's traditional strengths, the School has established four provincial and ministerial level platforms: the Joint Laboratory of International Cooperation of Ministry of Education on Structural Mechanics of Composite Materials for Electronic Devices, the Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Information Sensing Mechanics, the Shaanxi Innovation Center for Multi-Source Fusion Detection and Recognition, and Innovative Talent Introduction Base for Extreme Mechanics and Applications of Shaanxi Province. The Information Mechanics faculty team has been selected as a Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of Shaanxi Province, while the Low-Altitude Intelligent Sensing Innovation Team has been recognized as a first-class innovative team under the Sanqin Talent Special Support Program. Closely aligned with major national needs, the School tackles key technologies, and a number of its achievements have been successfully transferred and applied, strongly promoting innovation and development in aerospace information, the low-altitude economy, intelligent manufacturing, commercial space, smart cities, resource and environmental monitoring, ecological protection, security and warning, and disaster sensing. As one of the initiating organizations, the School proposed the “Meiyin” (Seek a bosom friend)program for the detection of exoplanets similar to Earth. The program has received important instructions from national leaders on two occasions and has been incorporated into the key mission portfolio of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. Over the past five years, faculty members of the School have led more than 20 major and key projects funded by national and ministerial-level programs, including seven projects with funding exceeding 10 million RMB. Related achievements have won four first prizes, including provincial and ministerial science and technology awards and awards from the Chinese Institute of Electronics. The School has also been approved for an Innovative Talent International Cooperation Project by the Ministry of Education and the China Scholarship Council, and has established university/school-level partnerships with five universities in Germany, Australia, France, and Italy.

A new starting point brings new missions, and a new journey inspires new endeavors. Guided by the university motto of “Valuing Virtue, Seeking Truth, Embracing Diligence, Taking Action,” all faculty members and students of the School of Information Mechanics and Sensing Engineering will continue to uphold and carry forward the spirit of Xidian University—“Striving in Hardship, Pursuing Self-Improvement, Seeking Truth and Practicality, and Serving the Nation and the People.” With the goal of establishing a first-class research-oriented school characterized by fundamental strength, frontier exploration, and innovative development, the School adheres to the development philosophy of “strengthening foundations, promoting interdisciplinary integration, and creating new growth frontiers.” It will deepen disciplinary development, strengthen integrated innovation, and strive to become a first-class talent training and scientific and technological innovation base in information mechanics, remote sensing science, and low-altitude technology in western China. With renewed vigor, the School will write a new chapter of serving the nation through science and technology and contribute Xidian's strength to building China into a leading country in education and science and technology.
